It's Official: 2013 was the Year of the Chromebook!

I posted here and here that Chromebooks were selling well this holiday season.

Now we have some "official" numbers:
NPD says that Chromebooks made up 21% of 2013 US laptop sales and 10% of all sales of tablets and computers.

Currently, there are at most a few hundred Chrome "Packaged" Apps... imagine what sales will be like next year when there should be thousands available. For those developers looking to get on the band wagon, start with:

More Watching Holiday Sales 2013

This is a continuation of my earlier article: Watching Computer and Tablet Sales in the 2013 Holiday Season.

Here is a summary of Amazon's best selling computers and accessories list 11/28 through 12/22. These results are from the top 20, sampled each night at 4am MST each of the 25 days. The number given below is the number of days a model of the listed category appears in the top 20 list. As multiple models exist in some of the categories, the number can be bigger than 25.

Only 2 Windows laptops ever appeared on the list (2 different ones from HP, one day each).
No desktop computer of any kind made the top 20.
Other than the cheapest iPad minis, Apple was absent from the top 20.
There were various whitebox tablets appearing occasionally (Android), though less than last year.

In summary, it is clear that Android tablets and Chromebooks dominated again this year.
Windows hybrids increased. Apple decreased. The Microsoft Surface RT above is the old model... one assumes the greatly lowered price is what attracted people.

Watching the customers in the local stores

This covers my stopping by local Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Staples and Office Depot stores 12/12-12/21.
First, I was impressed to find that ALL of the stores were carrying Chromebooks. In fact, Chromebooks were the only laptop/desktop/tablet carried by all of the stores. (iPads are not available at Staples.)

Best Buy is not doing very well this holiday season. They had less than half the traffic they had last year.
I added a Best Buy store to monitor in addition to the one in my town. This other store serves two cities slightly smaller than the one I live in, but combined are bigger than the city I live in. The second Best Buy does not have an Apple store, but does carry 2 Macbooks and has the usual iPad section. It also does not have a Windows store. It does have a Samsung store.
Chromebooks continued to be interesting to people. They were even more popular at the Best Buy I added.
The second Best Buy was doing a huge volume of Android tablet sales. For example, a cardboard isle display "shipper" of Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" tablets came with 120 tablets. 96 were already sold as of 12/19. To put that in perspective our 2 local Targets have less than a dozen iPads (2 models) in stock at each store. Our local Best Buy (not the second one) carries around 4 dozen iPads in stock. (Probably 10 different models).
The Samsung Store consistently had more business than the other individual stores at Best Buy. It was one of the few places where you almost always had customers. This was true in both Best Buys.
In all the store visits I made, I only saw 6 customers look at iPads, one customer look at MacBooks and one customer look at iMacs. This is flat-out weird. Last year I saw many dozens of customers looking at Apple products. (Our nearest "real" Apple Store is 65 miles away, so this mini store in my local Best Buy is the primary place to look at things Apple for more than 500,000 people.)
Windows laptops sold poorly. Better than Apple, but still quite poorly.
Desktop machines just didn't sell at all.
Office Depot had a crazy sale on Nexus 7s ($50 off! -- remember they are only $229 to begin with).
Ignoring times when they had special sale prices (for example Black Friday). Target, Walmart, Staples and Office Depot sold very few tablets or laptops. They generally had small inventories which did not seem to change much. This was decidedly different than last year.
Watching shoppers in Best Buy, I am suspecting that Apple is losing a fair number of iPad users to Kindle Fires. The customers in question were clearly using the tablets as consumer devices. In such an instance, a Kindle Fire gives you a lot more for much less money.
While I don't cover phones (as they are sold in too many places and in too many complicated ways)... I will say that phones easily outsold other computing devices. Phones had 3 times or more traffic in Best Buy than the rest of computing devices combined.
On the last Saturday before Christmas, the Microsoft Surface was again seeing a lot of interest. I watched it more closely this time. I think it occurs mostly when a specially trained employee is present. They seem to be good a getting people to try them. I never saw a single one sold though. However, I did over the course of the holidays see around 16 people try them. Compare that to the 6 I saw trying iPads and you can understand why I'm concerned about Apple.

Apa itu FOREX - Jawaban FOREX dan Sejarah FOREX

Forex (Foreign Exchange) adalah pertukaran mata uang asing. Forex dapat diartikan pula sebagai suatu bentuk perdagangan atau pertukaran mata uang suatu negara terhadap negara lain dengan suatu nilai relatif. Forex memiliki peranan besar dalam sistem ekonomi dunia. Dalam suatu transaksi mata uang, seseorang atau sebuah lembaga membeli mata uang dengan mata uang lain dalam jumlah yang disepakati. Badan dan lembaga keuangan di dunia berfungsi sebagai penghubung antara penjual dan pembeli dalam suatu transaksi mata uang. Sejarah dan perkembangan Forex berkaitan erat dengan sistem perdagangan international di masa lalu. Sebelum abad 19, perdagangan antar Negara International) menggunakan emas dan perak sebagai mata uang pembayaran. Namun pembayaran dengan emas dan perak memiliki banyak kekurangan, salah satu diantaranya adalah nilai tukarnya yang sangat labil. Penemuan tambang emas baru di masa itu akan menyebabkan nilai tukar emas merosot. Pengaruh supply dan demand sangat berpengaruh pada nilai tukar emas dan perak, sehingga nilai tukarnya menjadi sangat fluktuatif pada masa itu. Hingga akhirnya pada tahun 1875 diciptakan Gold Standard Monetary System. Pada era Gold Standard Monetary System, pemerintah menetapkan nilai tukar uang terhadap emas. Selama masa itu selisih nilai dua mata uang terhadap emas menjadi nilai tukar bagi kedua mata uang tersebut. Hal tersebut menjadi standarisasi nilai mata uang yang pertama dalam sejarah. Gold Standard Monetary System bertahan hingga awal perang dunia pertama. Pada masa itu negara-negara Eropa yang sedang bersitegang dengan German memiliki banyak proyek militer dengan beban finansial yang sangat besar sehingga emas tidak lagi dapat mem”backup” semua nilai mata uang yang dicetak pemerintah pada saat itu. Pada bulan Juli 1944, menjelang berakhirnya perang dunia kedua, 700 delegasi dari berbagai negara berkumpul di Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, untuk membicarakan dan mengatur sistem moneter internasional Pertemuan tersebut menghasilkan beberapa poin penting diantaranya:

Disepakatinya sebuah metode nilai tukar mata uang dengan rate tetap. Namun setelah sistem Bretton Woods gagal, pada tahun 1976 akhirnya dunia menyepakati penggunaan rate nilai tukar mata uang dengan sistem floating (floating foreignexchange rate). Sistem floating foreign exchange rate ini digunakan hingga saat ini.

US dollar dipilih sebagai mata uang international menggantikan emas

Lahirnya tiga lembaga internasional untuk mengawasi aktifitas ekonomi di seluruh dunia. Lembaga-lembaga tersebut adalahInternational Monetary Fund atau yang lebih dikenal dengan singkatan IMF (ada hingga saat ini), International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (sekarang menjadi bagian dari World Bank), dan yang terakhir adalah General Agreementon Tariffs and Trade (yang merupakan pelopor lahirnya World Trade Organization).

Seiring dengan majunya teknologi komputer, pada tahun 1970, forex mulai dilakukan secara online, dimana perdagangan forex tidak lagi melibatkan mata uang secara fisik. Pada saat itu, perdagangan forex secara online hanya dilakukan oleh pemerintah, perbankan, perusahaan-perusahaan internasional, dan lembaga-lembaga keuangan besar. Namun seiiring dengan majunya teknologi dan perkembangan internet, investor-investor perorangan dan lembaga-lembaga kecil dapat melakukan perdagangan (trading) forex secara online pada akhir dekade 1990-an. Kemudian di awal tahun 2000 hingga sekarang trading forex secara online dapat dilakukan oleh investor-investor dengan modal kecil berkat adanya perkembangan internet yang begitu pesat dan banyaknya brokerage company yang memfasilitasi perdagangan forex.

I am also betting that almost no one that bought one will still be using the touchscreen a month after purchasing it (hybrids excepted as one would use the touchscreen when in tablet mode).

Oddly, there were places on Black Friday that had discounts on iPads and iPhones. These places could be taken less profit or even losses, but it was widespread enough to make one wonder if Apple wasn't giving them discounts. We will know more in February when we see Apple's profit margins.

Microsoft in the last couple of weeks made some big boners in trying to make fun of Google. First they made some tee-shirts/coffee mugs accusing Google of various nefarious acts. The sold out very quickly... you see Googler employees saw it for what it really was, proof positive that Microsoft is on the run and they wanted a souvenir to commemorate the event. Watching Computer and Tablet Sales in the 2013 Holiday Season

One of this blog's early popular posts was when I did this same topic last holiday season. Continuing in the same way as I did before, first let me describe where my data comes from:

Starting with Thanksgiving Day, I visited my local Best Buy several times. I have also made similar visits to Staples, Target, Office Depot and Walmart. On these visits I monitor how many are looking at what items in the Computer/Tablet sections and chat with employees in that store section. Last year I also checked to see which touch screens were dirty, but alas, the stores have started cleaning them often and that is no longer useful. Daily, I also monitor the Amazon Bestsellers list, looking mostly at the top 20 for Tablets and Laptops, but also occasionally looking at the whole top 100 and also Desktops.

This methodology is obviously partially anecdotal, but at least last year I wasn't all that far off.

Ketidaksamaan Microsoft Office dengan Open Office

Kali ini saya membahas tentang perbedaan Microsoft Office dengan Open Office

Sudah tidak asing lagi bagi kita dengan istilah “Microsoft Office dan Open Office”, software ini merupakan sebuah perangkat lunak perkantoran yang dipakai untuk menulis, menginput, menyimpan, megirim, menghitung , pengolahan kata (wordprocessing), pengolahan lembar kerja (spread sheet), pembuatan gambar (drawing), pembuatan presentasi (presentation), pengolahan data, web editor, databes, dan formula editing.

Open office merupakan sebuah perangkat lunak (software) perkantoran yang berbasis linux dan yang didalamnya memuat fungsi pengolahan kata (wordprocessing), pengolahan lembar kerja (spread sheet), pembuatan gambar (drawing), pembuatan presentasi (presentation), pengolahan data, web editor, databes, serta formula editing dan yang dapat diperoleh secara gratis. Perbedaan ms. Office dengan open office

1. Open office diperoleh secara Gratis sedangkan ms. Office tidak.

2. Menu dan interface pada ms. Office berbeda peletakannya dengan open office.

3. Penggunaan Mail merge pada open office jauh lebih fleksibel dan lebih mudah dibanding mail merge ms.office.

4. Open office dapat membuka ms. Office, sedangkan ms. Office tidak.

5. Open office dapat menhasilkan file pdf, sedangkan ms. Office harus menggunakan plugin.

6. Open office memerlukan spek komputer yang lumayan tinggi, sedangkan ms. Office tidak.

Antara Microsoft Office dan OpenOffice :

Anda mungkin sudah tidak asing lagi dengan Software/Aplikasi Perkantoran Microsoft Office, atau bahkan mungkin anda bekerja tiap hari berkutat dengan Microsoft Office Word, Excel dan Powerpoint. Tapi Aplikasi Perkantoran Microsoft Office itu tidak gratis? Software tersebut tidak murah harganya. Nah.. Bagaimana dengan OpenOffice? OpenOffice[1] adalah software atau aplikasi yang didapat dengan tidak membayar atau gratis. Apakah anda sudah mengenalnya? Atau anda sudah menggunakannya? Atau bahkan anda belum pernah mengetahuinya?

Ditempat saya berkerja semua komputer sudah menggunakan OpenOffice, kecuali bagian accounting, karena masih ada keraguan dari pengguna untuk rumus atau fungsi fungsi tertentu.

Produk Microsoft Corporation ini sudah sekali kita yang selalu berhadapan dengan pekerjaan kantor atau tugas sekolah atau kuliah. Bahkan kita sudah menganggap bahwa jika kita ingin mengetik atau membuat laporan keuangan misalnya, pastilah harus menggunakan Microsoft Office (Word dan Excel).

Microsoft office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, dll) adalah paket aplikasi perkantoran yang dibuat Microsoft Corp. dan dikembangkan untuk dijalankan dibawah sistem operasi Windows.

Perjalanan Microsoft Office hingga saat ini, sudah mengalami banyak perubahan dan penambahan fasilitas, sejak pertama kali diluncurkan tanggal 30 Agustus 1992. waktu itu aplikasi perkantoran ini diberi nama Microsoft Office versi 3.0. pada versi tersebut Microsoft Office menyertakan Microsoft Word sebagai pengolah kata, Microsoft Excel sebagai pengolah angka, Microsoft PowerPoint sebagai aplikasi presentasi dan Microsoft Mail yang digunakan untuk menerima dan mengirim email.

Setelah popular dengan Microsoft Office 3.0. pada tahun 1995-an Microsoft Corp. Kembali meluncurkan Microsoft Office 95 seiring dengan diluncurkannya sistem operasi Microsoft Windows 3. 11 for Workgroup, perubahan yang cukup signifikan dalam sejarah sistem operasi PC saat itu. Sejalan dengan perkembangan sistem operasi Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office terus berkembang menjadi salah satu aplikasi perkantoran favorit dikalangan pengguna komputer di dunia, termasuk di Indonesia. Dan bahkan mengalahkan aplikasi pesaingnya yaitu Lotus. Sebagai catatan sebelumnya yang terkenal adalah Lotus. Tahun demi tahun Microsoft Corp. terus meluncurkan versi – versi baru Microsoft Office yang masih tetap digunakan sebagai andalan aplikasi perkantoran modern. Beberapa versi Microsoft Office yang banyak digunakan saat ini antara lain Microsoft Office 2000, Microsoft Office XP (2002) dan Microsoft Office 2003. seiring dengan pesatnya kemajuan teknologi, Microsoft Corp. melahirkan generasi terbaru sistem operasinya, yaitu Microsoft Windows Vista, disaat yang bersamaan Microsoft Corp. kembali meluncurkan aplikasi perkantoran terbarunya yaitu Microsoft Office 2007 yang saat ini sudah beredar dimasyarakat komputer dunia.

Beberapa program yang terdapat dalam Microsoft Office adalah :

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word merupakan program aplikasi pengolah kata (Word Processor) yang biasanya digunakan untuk membuat laporan, membuat dokumen berbentuk surat, membuat label surat, membuat tabel pada dokumen, dan masih banyak lagi dokumen – dokumen lain yang bisa dibuat dengan menggunakan Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel , yang disingkat Excel adalah program aplikasi yang banyak digunakan untuk membantu menghitung, memproyeksikan, menganalisa, dan mempersentasikan data dan pekerjaan dalam bentuk kolom-kolom. Disini kita akan banyak bersinggungan dengan metode – metode pembuatan tabel dan grafik yang sangat dibutuhkan sekali dalam penyusunan data – data perusahaan, hasil – hasil penelitian, maupun dalam pembuatan makalah pribadi.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint merupakan keluarga dari Microsoft Office. Bila kita menginstall Microsoft Office secara lengkap, PowerPoint akan secara otomatis terinstall. PowerPoint adalah aplikasi yang sangat powerfull untuk membuat suatu presentasi mulai dari awal, atau menggunakan wizard yang telah disediakan.

Nah.. sekarang kita bahas seputar OpenOffice.

OpenOffice.org adalah sebuah paket aplikasi perkantoran yang bersifat Open Source, yang berarti kita bebas menggunakannya dengan tidak membayar sedikitpun alias Gratis. Dan dapat didownload disini[2].

Paket tersebut termasuk komponen – komponen pengolah kata (word Processor), lembar kerja (Spreadsheet), presentasi, ilutrasi vector, dan gudang data (Database). OpenOffice.org ditujukan sebagai saingan bagi Microsoft Office yang dapat dijalankan dalam berbagai Platform, termasuk Windows, Solaris, Linux, dan Mac OS X. OpenOffice.org mendukung standar dokumen terbuka untuk pergantian data, dan dapat digunakan tanpa biaya.OpenOffice.org dibuat berdasarkan code dari Star Office, sebuah Office Suite yang dikembangkan oleh Star Division dan diakusisi oleh Sun Microsistems pada Agustus 1999. Code asal dari suite ini dilepas sebagai proyek sumber terbuka pada Juli 2000, dengan tujuan mendobrak dominasi pasar dari Microsoft Office dengan menyediakan pilihan yang berbiaya rendah, berkualitas tinggi, dan terbuka. Kode asal untuk suite aplikasi ini tersedia dibawah dua lisensi perangkat lunak yang berbeda : LGPL dan SISSI; dari versi 2.0, dia hanya tersedia dibawah LGPL.

Proyek dan perangkat lunak disebut sebagai “OpenOffice”, tetapi pengatur proyek melaporkan bahwa istilah ini adalah sebuah merk dagang yang dipegang oleh kelompok lain, sehingga mengharuskan mereka mengambil “OpenOffice.org” sebagai nama resminya, dan juga disingkat OOo.

Jadi saya sebagai penulis memberikan kesimpulan bahwa

perbedaan excel (ms office) dan calc (open office) terletak di sini :

1. harga = open office bisa didonlot secara gratis dan LEGAL di http://www.openoffice.org/ , sedangkan microsoft office untuk cari VERSI LEGALnya harus bayar lebih

2. ketersediaan = open office tersedia untuk segala macam sistem operasi, dari linux, windows, sampe mac, sedangkan microsoft office hanya tersedia untuk microsoft dan mac saja

3. kompatiblitas = open office punya format pribadi : .ods , sedangkan ms office dgn .doc , .ppt , ato .xls . open office bisa buka file2 ms office, bahkan yang .docx, .pptx, dan .xlsx (format office 2007 ke atas), sedangkan ms office ndak bisa sama sekali

4. kelengkapan & kemudahan = di sini bill gates menang. maksud saya ms office menang, karena memang orang2 indo udah familiar dgn namanya microsoft, baik o/s nya maupun office suite nya. jadi maklum saja klo banyak font2 ms office kadang2 ndak bisa dibaca oleh open office, terutama di linux / mac

Perintah - Perintah Dasar Pada Microsoft Office Excel 2007 untuk Pemula

Untuk mengoperasikan Microsof Excel, software ini telah menyediakan banyak sekali fasilitas berupa perintah perintah. Perintah perintah tersebut dikelompokkan berdasarkan fungsinya secara umum yang biasa kita sebut dengan Menu atauTab (pada excel 2007).

Selanjutnya guna memudahkan pengguna, perintah perintah tersebut ditampilkan berdasarkan kelompok perintah untuk keperluan tertentu. Baris perintah ini biasa juga disebut dengan Toolbar atau Group (excel 2007). Misalnya toolbar Formating, berisi perintah perintah untuk keperluan memformat tex atau angka.

Sebagian besar dari perintah perintah tersebut ditampilkan dalam bentuk lambang atau icon, dengan demikian anda tinggal klik icon nya dan perintah lansung di jalankan atau di eksekusi sehingga sangat membantu dalam kecepatan pengoperasian software.

Tidak semua perintah ditampilkan di buku kerja, namun perintah perintah yang tersembunyi dengan mudah dapat ditampilkan jika anda butuhkan atau disembunyikan kembali.

Berikut adalah perintah-perintah yang sering digunakan :

Office Button: Button ini menggantikan fungsi menu File pada versi sebelumnya. Klik button ini untuk menampilkan perintah-perintah dasar, seperti open, save, print dan juga Excel Options. Pada menu Excel Options, Anda dapat melakukan pengaturan seperti jumlah lembar kerja kosong yang ingin ditampilkan setiap kali membuka Excel yang biasanya terdapat di Options pada menu Tools.
Quick Access Toolbar: Berisi perintah-perintah yang sering digunakan, seperti Save, Undo, Redo, Open, dan sebagainya. Anda dapat menambah perintah dengan mengklik tanda panah di sampingnya atau klik kanan perintah yang ingin Anda taruh dan pilih Add to Quick Access Toolbar.
Ribbon: Terdiri dari tab Home, Insert, Page Layout, Formulas, Data, Review dan View yang memiliki Groups masing-masing, seperti pada tab Home berupa Font, Alignment, Number dan sebagainya.
Dialog Box Launcher: Tanda panah kecil pada sudut kanan bawah setiap Group ini menunjukkan pilihan-pilihan lain yang tersedia pada group tersebut. Klik tanda panah ini untuk memunculkan sebuah kotak dialog atau task pane.

Klik tombol Zoom Out untuk memperkecil tampilan atau Zoom Inuntuk memperbesar tampilan. Anda juga dapat menarik Zoom Slideruntuk memperbesar atau memperkecil tampilan.
View Buttons terdiri dari tombol Normal, Page Layout dan Page Break Preview. Page Layout view (lihat gambar di bawah) merupakan fitur baru pada Excel 2007. Pada view ini terdapat margins dan rulers yang dapat Anda atur posisi marginnya. Anda juga dapat dengan mudah membuat header dan footer pada view ini. Saat Anda mengetik di bagian ini, tab Design Header & Footer Tools akan ditampilkan padaRibbon.

Tip: Anda juga dapat membuat header dan footer dengan mengklik tabInsert dan pada grup Text klik Header & Footer.

Menggunakan Keyboard

Shortcuts yang dimulai dengan CTRL (seperti CTRL+C untuk menyalin) masih sama dengan versi Excel sebelumnya. Kecuali untuk shortcuts yang dimulai dengan ALT terdapat perubahan.
Pada Office 2007, Anda diberi kemudahan dengan adanya petunjuk (Key Tips) yang ditampilkan di layar saat Anda menekan tombol ALT, sehingga Anda tidak perlu menghapal shortcuts. Tekan tombol ALTuntuk memunculkan Key Tip dan untuk menghilangkannya, tekan tombol ALT sekali lagi.

Menyimpan Dokumen

Pada Excel 2007, Anda dapat membuka dokumen yang dibuat pada versi sebelumnya (Excel 95 - Excel 2003).
Saat Anda membuat dokumen pada Excel 2007 dan menyimpannya dengan format versi sebelumnya, maka Compatibility Mode akan aktif dimana fitur-fitur pada Excel 2007 yang tidak sesuai dengan versi sebelumnya tidak dapat digunakan.
Contoh: jika lembar kerja pada Excel 2007 memiliki lebih dari 100.000 baris data maka akan diberitahukan bahwa baris di luar jumlah 65.636 akan dikeluarkan. Dengan begitu Anda dapat memindahkan baris-baris tersebut ke lembar kerja yang baru.
Anda juga dapat melakukan Compatibility Checker secara manual dengan cara berikut: klik Office Button , pilih Prepare dan klikRun Compatibility Checker.
Dokumen yang disimpan dengan format Excel 2007, tidak dapat dibuka pada Excel versi sebelumnya. Sebaiknya Anda menyimpan dokumen pada format Excel 97-2003 Workbook juga, sebagai cadangan jika komputer lain yang akan membuka dokumen ini belum memiliki Office 2007.
